課程概述

In Sophomore Composition students refine their skill in presenting ideas in the clear and powerful manner expected in Academic English compositions.

The course begins with a review of paragraphing skills and English grammar trouble spots. This review is crucial to developing strong compositions, so we'll strive to establish good paragraph writing techniques. When the class has a good command of paragraphing, we will move on to longer writing. The key is to be sure all students have a good background in the organization of ideas in paragraphing before moving to longer writings.

Focus then shifts to writing five paragraph essays with clear thesis statements. Students can expect ample practice in writing skills and reviewing the writing of other students in class.
Approximately one-third of class time will be spent on in-class discussions of the textbook; one-third in small groups to applying the concepts from the textbook; and one-third on “writing” either individually or in peer review groups. Students will also have ample time in class for mini-conferences on their writing, both to improve their writing as well as to share and enjoy the ideas they have written.
Students should note that the syllabus listed below is tentative and will be revised to accommodate the writing level of students enrolled in class. Be sure to check the online syllabus frequently as it may change

Grades will be determined by (1) preparation and participation in class (textbook exercises),
(2) student work (paragraphs and essay)
and (3) a reflective essay which must be emailed to the instructor by December 27, 2010
